Ethical principles and standards of tour guides

The ethical principles and standards of tour guides are based on the guidelines of the WFTGA World Federation of Tour guide Associations

  • A tour guide provides a qualified, insightful presentation; notifies, interprets, and highlights the surroundings; presents with objectivity and enthusiasm in a courteous and polite manner.
  • The tour guide ensures that all information he/she presents is based on fact; presents in a clear and readable manner what is truth and what is history, legend or opinion.
  • A tour guide has information about events that are taking place in the area, region where he/she works, including, but not limited to, information about seasonal events, exhibitions, rules and regulations on how to navigate the roads and facilities in all places where tours will be conducted.
  • A tour guide is prepared for any tour, in a situation where the tour plan will be received with a certain amount of advance notice; provides information at a certain time, and is responsible for organizing a smooth, safe, completed tour within the specified time.
  • A tour guide is sensitive to the interests and values of the tour participants and does not in any way share or let the tourists feel his/her personal views and beliefs on such controversial issues as religion, politics, lifestyle, and sports.
  • A tour guide knows and adheres to the values of the company where he/she works and does not solicit work from a client of the company without the company's permission; behaves loyally to the company and defends confidential and proprietary information. Moreover, a tour guide tries to build a friendly and helpful, positive relationship with the client. He/she maintains discretion in the area of conducting his/her own business while doing his/her job.
  • A tour guide dresses appropriately for the type of tour being conducted.
  • Tour guide maintains a professional respect and spirit of cooperation with other tour guides. He/she endeavors to maintain a good working relationship with all participants in the tourism service value chain while performing his/her job.
  • A tour guide accepts each tour as a serious commitment and cancels only when absolutely necessary. Communicates the cancellation of a tour as far in advance as possible.
